Dyslexia In Children and Politics

http://www.helpingchildrenwithdyslexia.com/

Last November I had the good fortune to dine with a group of professionals in Melbourne from the Learning Disabilities Network. It was via this group I met Joanne Webber, someone who has a comprehensive knowledge of learning disabilities and what needs to happen in Australia to better support children with them. Joanne travels to Canberra regularly to meet with Government Ministers in her current professional role.
I am thrilled to be able to tell you I was able to organise a meeting between Joanne and a senior advisor in Education Minister, Peter Garrett’s office on the 18th of November. Joanne was able to pass a set of recommendations as to how our schools could better support children with dyslexia onto Peter Garrett that I had written at his request. She also presented the Minister with a folder full of your personal emails from the Australian Dyslexia Trust lobby website.
Thank You so much for writing your personal stories, your concerns and your needs. You will be happy to know these are all in the Minister’s possession and being read and passed around his office now.
Joanne reported that the meeting was a great success and that the Education Minister is open to hearing what Australians affected by dyslexia are seeking and is also prepared to act. I will keep you informed as this process unfolds. It is important however to continue to send your stories into the Australian Dyslexia Trust so I can continue to forward them on. If you have not sent a story please do so or send me another. It will help enormously if you spread the word and encourage others to do the same. Politicians cannot make the appropriate changes we are seeking unless they understand our everyday challenges on a personal level.
If we all work together we can change the future for Australians with dyslexia. The link to the Australian Dyslexia trust can be found on the right hand side of:Dyslexia In Children
Media Release Email
Thank you also for responding to the media release I sent to you on the 5th of November regarding the Disabilities Funding review that is about to commence. To those of you who wrote an email to the Review of Funding For School Secretariat, you have been heard. A representative from the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) rang me to tell me they had received many of your emails. Just so you know I am also going to send some more to add to our argument that funding for dyslexia needs to be discussed during these talks. Every email helps and our federal politicians are starting to become more attuned to our needs and wants.
