Liz Dunoon is a past school teacher and a mother to three children who have all struggled to learn to read, write and spell. All three of her children have been diagnosed with dyslexia.
In 2004 her oldest son started school. After 4 months he was unable to read any of the basic words being sent home on flashcards and was not capable of reading any of the words in his readers. After speaking to his teacher about her concerns, Liz came to the realisation that his teacher was totally unaware of his plight and could not offer any strategies to help him.
Not one to sit around and dwell on what might have been. Liz started to research how she could help her son to learn and to be successful at school. With the teachers approval she began to tutor 6 students from her son’s class, who were also struggling to read and with 3 short sessions per week over 6 weeks she had every child in her group reading and smiling once again.
Liz now works full time in the area of education and learning difficulties. On this journey she has worked with some of the world’s leading learning difficulties experts. She now researches, reports, writes and speaks on the topic of intelligence, learning difficulties and learning disabilities. Liz is a published author and spends the majority of her time helping and supporting families affected by learning difficulties.
Liz’s first book has sold over 4,000 copies and is called ‘HELPING CHILDREN WITH DYSLEXIA – 21 Super Strategies To Ensure Your Child’s Success At School’. So passionate about this cause Liz even sought the help of one of the world’s most famous business entrepreneurs, Sir Richard Branson, who is also dyslexic. He is a wonderful role model for all families affected by dyslexia and he willingly offered his support by writing an inspirational foreword for the book. Liz has since started a free resources website under the same name as the book, she has written 3 more books and also started and runs ‘The Australian Dyslexia Trust’ website, to lobby the Australian government for educational reform for children with learning difficulties.
Currently residing in Melbourne Australia, Liz is married to Andrew who also struggled with reading and spelling at school. Although Andrew failed English at secondary school, he went on to successfully complete a double degree at university and has never look back. He has the ability to think outside the square and is involved in a series of successful businesses.
Liz loves to read, write and speak and Andrew is a whizz at math so together they have used their strengths to create a learning program that works. They have designed The Ten Minute Tutor to meet the needs of every individual, to allow students to catch up on schooling, while developing a healthy self-esteem.
Both Liz and Andrew have had their own past struggles at school, Liz with math and Andrew with Literacy, so they are well placed to understand how it feels to struggle. Most importantly they understand that formal schooling does not suit every learner and that a difficult school experience should not define a child’s future prospects or levels of life success. There are thousands of people who have struggled with formal schooling, yet are incredibly intelligent and have gone on to enjoy amazingly happy and successful lives.
Together Liz and Andrew have three children who have all found it difficult to learn to read, write and spell even though they are highly intelligent. After many years of researching to assist her own children, Liz has decided to dedicate her life to providing support to as many people as possible.
Liz, Andrew and their family live in Melbourne, Australia and when not making videos for The Ten Minute Tutor they enjoy spending time together as a family and supporting others. Liz and Andrew’s three children tackle each school year confidently and successfully and Liz continues to research and write so she can offer ongoing support to those families affected by learning differences.
